Papaya Milkshake 木瓜牛奶
Papaya Milk 木瓜牛奶

This is a popular drink in Asian countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. This is my simple home-version. I thought of doing this because I have leftover papaya from making papaya, snow fungus and almonds dessert. The papaya was a little over-ripe and soft so I thought it will be nicer in a drink than eating it on its own. It turns out really nice and a healthy, refreshing drink. Some people also believe that this drink is beneficial to expectant mothers because it is nutritious.  For other known properties of this drink, check out the comments ;)

This was actually my breakfast when I was in Indonesia. Papaya is so cheap there and healthy. I didn’t add any milk and honey, thou. Just water and blend.

Very nice drink. The drinks stall probably use condensed milk which is a bit unhealthier. I like your healthy version.

I think sometimes the drinks stall tend to add too much water, hence they need to thicken/sweeten with condensed milk, hehe

Papaya is my son’s favorite fruit or the only fruit that he will eat it willingly. We love to put a little bit of lime juice. Milkshake version looks yummy! Will try this soon :)

It’s a very healthy drink! This is good for those who don’t like to eat the fruit. You can mask the papaya smell by throwing in some zest of lime or lemon.

I always have this constipation problem. Eating papaya is one of my remedies. Now I have another healthy version in my list. :) Thank you for sharing.

That’s what I do to my over-riped papayas too but I don’t add any sweetener as the over-riped papaya is already sweet on its own.

I’ve heard that papaya milk shake is good for boobs development, so that’s also one of the reason why I’m making this for my girls, and all the papaya soups and desserts :P

I think I’ve actually only eaten papaya in those awful fruit salads that come in the plastic cups. This, on the other hand, looks delicious and fresh. Seems like I need to grab a ripe papaya from the store pronto to give this a try.

Yum, I make this all the time when I have overripe papayas. Or ones that aren’t sweet. Love drinking this. I’ve also heard the rumors of what this milk is supposed to do…and I can say that it definitely didn’t work for me. After my mom read about it, I started drinking a few cups a day for a few months..nothing. Hehe

I want to try this, do you think it will work if i use a hand held immersion blender?

Reply

32 wiffy August 29, 2010 at 3:07 pm

I think it will work, because you just want to blend them till smooth.

We actually add condensed milk to the mixture instead of honey–next time I will try the honey! In the U.S. we have a latin food brand GOYA and they make frozen papaya puree that also works well for this milkshake!

Yeah, it’s very popular in HK. Whenever I go back to HK, I’d definitely buy this delicious cool drink when we’re in hot days. It’s very nutritious too.

I’ve had this before and it is delicious. When I first heard of it I was thinking “yucks”. But surprisingly it was so tasty. I guess for anyone who doesn’t like papayas, this would be a no-no. You can do the same for honey dew melon as well, but probably omit the honey.

I made this with soy milk, and it turns out that papaya ans pawpaw contain an enzyme that coagulates soymilk! It was definitely surprising when I retrieved the drink I had put in earlier to find it was now a mousse XD it was still delicious though. great recipe.
