We often fork out top dollar in search for the holy-grail beauty product, when it could be sitting in the kitchen all this time! I am talking about a DIY oatmeal face mask, made with the cheapest and most common kitchen ingredients (oats, honey & water).

It is all-natural, cheap and only 5 minutes to make. Oatmeal and honey mask is well-known to be beneficial for acne-prone, oily or combination skin;  though almost any skin condition will benefit from this concoction as it provides gentle exfoliation & cleansing.

 Oatmeal Mask

Oatmeal Honey Face Mask
Properties: provides deep cleansing and gentle exfoliation; combats acne; gentle enough to suit most sensitive skin-types; smoothens skin;
Suitable for: Any skin type, sensitive skin, oily, combination and/or acne-prone skin
Tip: Do a skin patch test on a small area on your skin, before trying out any new product.
Frequency: Can be used daily

Warning: This mask is certainly both messy to apply and to rinse off, but very well worth the effort! Your skin will be gently exfoliated with a dewy glow after rinsing the mask off. I highly recommended that you lie down in bed while doing the mask, and/or do it before shower. The longer you allow the mask to sit on your face (I recommend 20-30 minutes), the harder it is to remove it, which is a good thing because you will  be massaging your face in circular motion to loosen the mask and in doing so, you are gently exfoliating your skin at the same time.

Grinding oatmeal (left) to powder (right)

In place of distilled water, you can also use home-made rose water toner (what I am using) or lemon juice. Rose water toner is suitable for all skin types, while lemon juice can help to combat acne and lighten scars.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp oatmeal (rolled oats/instant oats/plain oats)
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 3/4 tsp distilled water add 1/4 tsp at a time

Directions:

  1. Using a coffee grinder, grind the oatmeal to powder.
  2. In a small bowl, mix ground oatmeal, honey and distilled water, 1/4 tsp at a time, until a thick paste is formed.
  3. After cleansing, apply face mask onto entire face except eye area for 20-30 minutes. Rinse off the mask by gently massaging in circular motion to loosen. Follow up with your usual beauty routine (such as toner and moisturizer).
