Mango Sago Pomelo

This is possibly my favourite Chinese dessert. Maybe it’s because mango is also my favourite fruit.  Though I am not really into sweet foods most of the time, an exception can be said for Chinese desserts like this one. When I am having a meal at a Chinese restaurant, I’ll check out the menu if they serve this dessert and if they do, I’ll reserve some space in my tummy for it at the end of the meal. It usually cost around S$5 for a small bowl at a mid-range Chinese cafe/restaurant, and sometimes it comes with measly portions of pomelo, or occassionally to my horror, no pomelo at all. So not only is it cheap to make a huge party bowl at home, you can ensured of second helpings and generous toppings of cubed mango and pomelo.

Mango Sago Pomelo

Ingredients
(Serves 4)
Adapted from didally & Zu’s Kitchen

- 400ml mango juice (freshly squeezed using fruit juice extractor or ready made; I use Marigold PeelFresh)
- 150ml evaporated milk
- 2 large ripe honey mangoes, cubed (see photo below)
- sugar syrup by mixing 2 tbsp caster sugar with just enough hot water to dissolve
- 80g pearl sago, soak in water for 20 minutes till white and enlarged, then rinsed
- Pomelo (I use the Ipoh Tambun variety), peeled and sacs separated, about 50g or more

Slicing the mango, the cheater's way
Short-cut way of cutting the mangoes into small cubes

Tools
- Blender

Directions
1) Boil a pot of water, add sago and boil for a short while till the sago is transparent. Run the cooked sago through a fine sieve and running water to remove excess starch. Set aside.
2) Reserve one quarter of the cubed mangoes for garnishing (step 4). In a blender, blend the rest of the mangoes and the evaporated milk for a short while till well mixed.
3) Mix mango smoothie prepared in step 2 with mango juice. Add sugar syrup to taste. Add cooked pearl sago prepared in step 1 to the mixture. Chill in fridge.
4) To serve, portion out to individual serving bowls and garnish with pomelo sacs and cubed mangoes.

I love mango and pomelo as well. Recently I’ve discovered pomelo during my trip to Thailand. great fruit combination – sounds like a delicious dessert.

The thai pomelo is the pink type, I would love to try to make a Thai-style version of this dessert in future :)

Sounds awesome, although I have no idea what sago is. ;)

sago (made of tapioca starch) is more commonly seen in Asian desserts I guess. This will still be nice without sago :)

This is a great dessert especially with KL being so hot during the CNY period. I’m already drooling and it’s not 9am yet.

Haven’t had mango and pomelo sago yet, but I do love pretty much anything with sago in it. My favorite is taro and coconut sago but the fruit flavors also are quite delicious. Rarely see those though as I usually just get the free sago at restaurants and they are usually just red bean, taro/sweet potato, or coconut milk.

same here, love almost everything with sago. Haven’t eaten the other types of desserts you mentioned, I have to try them coz they sound delicious.

the addition of pomelo is quite common here. not sure if it’s a local thing :)

How timely of your post! Lovely dessert! This is something I can make with the pomelo in my house. :) The pomelo makes the dessert come alive, doesn’t it? I can’t understand how some restaurants can list a dish as “XYZ” and only deliver “X” and “Y”. AND charge for it. :(

28 wiffy February 21, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Oh same here, I encountered it so frequently here. So sometimes we have to make it ourselves hehe

I love 楊枝甘露 dearly, too!! Thanks for sharing! I’m so gonna make it soon … After all, Chinese desserts are as heavy as Western ones are … It’s time to give ourselves a break after the binge eating during CNY.

Yours looks so good!!

My hubby received a lot of pakistani mangoes the other day and they were very ripe so it came at the right time for this dessert. First time I made and it was a success!! I’m bringing to a pot luck party tonite! Waiting to hear feedback from my friends :) Thanks for this recipe!
