Food Review: In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out Burger
I can haz double-double cheezburger? :P

One of the most satisfying eats I found in San Francisco was not some high class, overpriced food but that of a humble, inexpensive burger served at In-N-Out Burger, a fast food joint. This fast food chain is found mainly on the western part of US.

[One distinct difference I discovered from travelling from the west coast to east coast is the availability of its popular fast-food joints. For example, while I practically see a McDonald's outlet at almost every turn in the eastern part, McDonald's outlets are rarer sightings in the western cities I visited (L.A and SF). And like I said earlier, there isn’t any In-N-Out burger outlets in the east coast (correct me if I’m wrong).]

(I love the idea of the ‘In-N-Out’ logo at the entrance … clever!)

What I like most about this fast food outlet was that you could tell that the ingredients used (from the hand-leafed lettuce to the freshly baked buns to the preservative-free patties) were pretty fresh. And talking about freshness - you could even see the entire process of French Fries-making at the outlet. Behind the cashier, you could see the crew peeling the potatoes, cutting them to fries, soaking the uncooked fries in water for a while and finally deep frying them, draining the oil, blah blah blah…

Besides the freshness, their packaging is appealing and cheery. And yep, the food comes at an attractive price too. I think it’s one of the cheapest but tastiest fast foods I’ve tried in the US.

Horray for nice and cheap fast foods! :D

  4. This is the one place I didn’t get to on our recent visit to SF — and everyone kept telling me they have the very best burgers. Next time….

  11. I just moved from California to Florida, and In-N-Out is definitely something that I miss a lot… I must say, we were definitely proud to have them in our state haha.

By Sera on Aug 16, 2008

  12. I think food in general is fresher, more diverse and basically just all around better in California versus in the Eastern US. I think Californians demand and appreciate (and expect) higher quality food overall.

By Foodie on Aug 16, 2008

  13. It is an absolute shame they don’t have In-N-Outs here on the east coast. As a former west coaster, you now have me craving one of their cheeseburgers. Mmmmmm. Best fast food burgers ever.

I wonder how cheap airfare is to California, Arizona, or Nevada ;)

By Essemm on Aug 16, 2008

  14. This is one of the things that makes me regret moving cross-country… because, alas, you’re right. There are no In-and-Out Burgers here on the eastern sea board.:(

  15. I know what I’m having for lunch! I guess working in Irvine, living in Orange, and having 2 In’N'Outs on my way from home to work isn’t a bad thing ;-)

By Blake on Aug 16, 2008

  16. Hey, great pictures of a really tasty burger! How long will you be in the US?

By Nate on Aug 16, 2008

  17. OH, I SOOoo agree with you about how delcicious the In ‘N Out burgers are.

Although I live in a trailer park in Clearwater, Florida, I get frquent hankerings for an In ‘N Out burger, especially since my recent extended stay at the Canyon Ranch resort (you can read about it on my CassandraCrossing website).

Whenever I get the urge, my boyfriend “Big Bear” arranges to fly us out to San Francisco for a burger feast.

By the way, your photos were great!

By Bee on Aug 16, 2008

  20. I like to get their cheeseburgers animal style (extra veggies, extra sauce, pickles and grilled onions). Yum!!

By Jessi on Aug 16, 2008

In the midwest, Steak & Shake is a good substitute.

    you made me “California-sick”….

By tigerfish on Aug 18, 2008

  26. Oh man I am so jealous…and hungry…right now. They aren’t even available on all of the West coast. Last time I checked this fabulous awesomeness came only in shades of California and Nevada. *whine* We have Dick’s  in Seattle, but it doesn’t even come close. Oh, and definitely, try everything Animal style- so good!
