Bean Sprouts with Salted Fish
March 11, 2008 – 12:58 pm by wiffyCan’t believe I am cooking bean sprouts because I absolutely hate it. Friends who know me knows my enmity with them, heh. But forced to cook it after buying a pack of ’silver sprouts’ (just a fancy name for bean sprouts with heads and tails removed I guess) for $1.60 for the hamsters (the usual, cheaper one ran out), and I didn’t want to waste the rest of the packet. Surprisingly, the taste is good (I added lots of salted fish to mask the bean sprouts’ taste) and for the first time in my life, I actually ate some and thought it was yummy! =D But I still won’t risk eating bean sprouts outside because most are undercooked and had a very raw taste, argh =P But I will definitely cook this more often at home because it is a cheapy, healthy & easy, and the hamsters seem to prefer the ’silver sprouts’ to the normal ones (picky).

Bean Sprouts with Salted Fish
(and bell peppers, wolf berries, white button mushrooms)
[My recipe is referenced and adapted from wokking mum]
Ingredients
100g beansprouts (head & tail removed)
1/4 bell pepper, sliced thinly
3 white/brown button mushrooms, sliced
20g salted fish, soaked in water & sliced to bits
1 tsp wolfberries
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp chopped garlic
Directions
1. Heat oil in wok. Saute garlic & salted fish till fragrant.
2. Add bell pepper & mushrooms and stir fry for a minute.
3. Add bean sprouts & wolfberries. Stir fry over high heat for a few minutes. Nice bean sprouts should be cooked (not slightly raw, yucks - personal bias) but still crunchy.
Variations

Simpler version with only salted fish & red pepper

Added on 7 Apr 08 - Beansprouts with salted fish, green pepper, wolfberries and pumpkin
Who’s cooking this too:
- Wokking Mum
- Rasa Malaysia
- Sim Cooks’

Gimme gimme gimme. I love the combination of a bland tasting veg paired with and ingredient(salted fish of course) that punches it up. Bursts of salted fish in the dish gives it ooppmmphh!

I like your version with mushrooms, bell peppers and wolfberries. A plate of plain looking bean sprouts now looks so much more interesting! Lucky hamsters. Oh, btw, they love korean strawberries. lol

Hahhaa…I’m the same. I started to hate bean sprouts when I had some served outside and the sprouts had a raw taste and smell (chow chey)! Yucks! So I will have to make sure it’s fully cooked and sometimes ask my hubs to try some and tell me if its got that raw taste!

Hamster food… LOL! Some people like bean sprouts ‘undercooked’ while some like them ‘overcooked’. It’s a matter of taste so I guess if you are quite specific it’s better to cook them at home! The husband adores salted fish and chicken fried rice and we always order it at our local Chinese restaurant. Maybe I should get a pack of salted fish, hmmm…
